| In Aubusson, the world capital of tapestry set in the heart of France on the banks of the pure waters of the River Creuse, time seems to stand still... |

| As of lore,
at the time of the Royal Aubusson Manufactory, Man is taming wool and colour.
The healders weave on their looms, with the same care as the gestures that were ceaselessly practiced in olden times, the finest cartoons of the XVth. to the XIXth. centuries and the creations of the greatest artists of today. |

Tracing its
origins to Asia and then to North Africa, tapestry is presumed to have
been introduced in France at the return from the Christian crusades in
the Near East, unless it was at the time of the Saracen invasions.
In any case, this craftsmanship is traced back in Aubusson to the XVth. century, and knew a progressive success till it reached its zenith under Louis XIVth. It was his Prime Minister Colbert who elevated Aubusson to the rank of Royal Manufactory in 1664. A well deserved honour/recognition at a period in which Aubusson tapestries were enhancing the splendour of all the courts of Europe ! |
| At the coming
of french revolution, tapestry suffered from this auspicious period, often
synonymous of privilege. As many other works of art, it was subjected to
destruction.
Raising out from this temporary decline, a renewal of tapestry started at the begining of the XXth century, on the impulse of the artist Jean Lurçat then followed by famous contemporary painters such as Dali, Picasso or Léger. Aubusson tapestry finds a new expansion among a wider audience.
